AMA launches Public Toilet Management Manual

14.Apr.2021

A manual intended to guide the safe management of public toilets has been launched in Accra.

The 8-page book which was authored by the Director of Public Health Department of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly(AMA), Madam Florence Kuukyi is expected to enlighten public toilet owners and managers on their role as well as importance in the city management.

Speaking at a brief ceremony to outdoor the book on Wednesday at the AMA old office, the Mayor of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah said the book was an important addition to public knowledge as it was in line with the President’s plan to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa.

He stressed that the book served as a clarion call on all to help in attaining the goal of making Accra Clean.

“The responsibility of discharging that particular call relies on all of us as citizens and collectively all these efforts will lead us into what we are all yearning for,” he said.

The Mayor observed that over the years there had been no strict guidelines to the management of public toilets in Ghana and this had led to inefficiency in terms of its management and maintenance.

“We observed that management of public toilets have been done haphazardly without clear guidance and protocols for people to follow...” he added.

He also disclosed that Environmental Health Officers would soon come out with clear guidelines which would meet the World Health Organization (WHO) standards and ensure compliance with these guidelines.

The Director of the Metropolitan Public Health Department (MPHD), Mrs Florence Kuukyi stated that the book was aimed at addressing unhygienic management practices of operators and owners of public toilets facilities.

She added that the book would also provide the Assembly with the appropriate templates and standards for the operation of all public toilets within its jurisdiction.

“The AMA has also got a vital role to play in the management of the public toilet facilities and so the book would also serve as a guide for the management of public toilet facilities within the Assembly”, she said.
