Accra decongestion enters day three at Kaneshie; Mayor inspects drainage, visits Kaneshie Polyclinic

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) entered the third day of its ongoing decongestion exercise on Tuesday, combining enforcement with engagement at the Kaneshie Market and adjoining commercial corridors.

The operation, which began at about 8:00 a.m., was led by the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, who, together with his team, monitored compliance with the Red Line policy despite persistent rainfall.

At the Kaneshie Market, the Mayor, together with the Municipal Chief Executive for  Ablekuma Central, Hon. Frank Nkansah inspected sections of the trading area affected by flooding and engaged traders on measures to allow rainwater to flow freely and prevent recurring floods.

The inspection continued to the Metro Mass Transit lorry station at Kaneshie, around First Light, where the Mayor engaged drivers, station officials and shop owners to take their challenges and educate them on the decongestion exercise.

Addressing the media,  the Mayor explained that while some traders welcomed the Red Line policy, others opposed it, adding that strict enforcement was necessary to ensure order and accountability.

The Mayor described the third day of the exercise as successful, citing increased compliance with the Red Line directive, especially among women traders, some of whom had called for stricter enforcement.

He added that the AMA was working closely with sister Assemblies to ensure smooth and coordinated implementation.

The Mayor emphasised the importance of sustainability, noting that lessons learned from a similar exercise the previous year were being applied to avoid failure.

He stressed that the Assembly was determined to deliver lasting results and ensure that the decongestion effort succeeded.
