AMA installs new public waste bins in Accra to boost sanitation

21.Mar.2026

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has commenced the installation of new public waste bins within the Central Business District (CBD) of Accra as part of efforts to improve sanitation and promote responsible waste disposal.

The initiative follows the donation of public waste bins by Duraplast on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, aimed at supporting the Assembly’s ongoing drive to enhance waste management infrastructure across the city.

The 20 bins were installed along the Kinbu to CMB stretch, a busy commercial corridor known for its high human and vehicular traffic, where waste generation is particularly high.

Speaking during the installation exercise, the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, explained that the bins were strategically placed to serve traders, pedestrians, and roadside operators who generate waste in the course of their daily activities.

He stated that the Assembly would ensure regular collection of waste from the bins, indicating that sanitation workers and trucks would be deployed daily to empty them and maintain cleanliness in the area.

The Mayor emphasised that the bins were not intended for household waste disposal, cautioning residents against transporting refuse from their homes to dump into the public bins.

He warned that anyone found engaging in such practices would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

He appealed to the public to support the initiative by using the bins responsibly, stressing that maintaining cleanliness in the city required collective effort and cooperation.

He also used the opportunity to call on corporate institutions to come on board and support the initiative.

Earlier, during the presentation of the bins, Ms Mireille Hitti, the Executive Director of Duraplast, stated that the donation formed part of the company’s commitment to national development and environmental sustainability.

She noted that as a proudly Ghanaian company, Duraplast believed its responsibility extended beyond manufacturing to supporting initiatives that promote a cleaner and healthier environment.

Ms Hitti explained that sanitation remained a critical challenge in Accra and that proper waste disposal was essential not only for cleanliness but also for public health, environmental protection, and civic pride.

She expressed confidence that providing the necessary infrastructure, such as waste bins, would encourage responsible disposal habits among residents and businesses.

The Executive Director further called for collaboration among residents, businesses, and stakeholders, urging all to take ownership of their environment and support the AMA’s sanitation efforts.

She also commended the leadership of the AMA for its continued commitment to improving sanitation in the city and reaffirmed Duraplast’s readiness to partner with the Assembly on future initiatives.
