The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced that the September edition of the National Sanitation Day clean-up exercise will be observed as a Post-Homowo clean-up exercise in Accra on Saturday, 5th September 2026.

The exercise, scheduled to take place from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, will focus on the extensive cleansing and weeding of road medians, clearing of curbs, removal of refuse, sweeping of public spaces, and general cleaning of major roads, markets, lorry parks, communities, and business districts.

In a statement issued by the Assembly, the AMA said all shops, stalls, tabletop businesses and trading activities were expected to remain closed during the exercise to allow for full participation and effective cleaning of the metropolis.

It said the exercise would focus particularly on Graphic Road, Kwame Nkrumah Circle through Avenor and Caprice to the Abeka junction section of the J.J. Rawlings Avenue, as well as other strategic areas within the metropolis that required urgent sanitation attention.

According to the Assembly, the Post-Homowo clean-up formed part of the government’s sustained efforts to improve environmental sanitation, protect public health, enhance the city's beauty, ensure safer road corridors, and promote collective responsibility for keeping Accra clean.

The AMA emphasised that no shops, stalls or businesses should open during the clean-up exercise, adding that traders, shop owners, transport operators, food vendors and residents were required to actively participate by cleaning their surroundings, weeding frontage areas, clearing road curbs and removing refuse.

It urged corporate institutions, organisations, non-governmental organisations, religious bodies, youth groups, community-based organisations and other stakeholders to support the exercise through personnel deployment and community mobilisation.

The Assembly said Assembly Members were also expected to lead clean-up exercises in their respective electoral areas to ensure effective coordination, community mobilisation and active participation at the local level.

The AMA cautioned that enforcement would be intensified during the exercise, warning that persons who failed to participate, obstructed the exercise or engaged in trading activities during the clean-up period would be arrested, fined or prosecuted before the sanitation court.
