Staff of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Head Office have emerged as the overall winners of a cooking competition organised to climax the Assembly’s week-long Eat Ghana, Wear Ghana celebration, held on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at the forecourt of the Assembly.
The event, which marked the highlight of the cultural week, brought together staff from various departments and sub-metropolitan districts, all dressed in Ghanaian-themed attire, to prepare and present a variety of indigenous dishes.
The competition was aimed at promoting local cuisine and encouraging support for home-grown industries, while also fostering unity and cultural pride among staff of the Assembly.
At the end of the keenly contested event, the AMA Head Office secured first place with a well-prepared serving of banku accompanied by okro stew.
The Honourable Assembly Members placed second with their presentation of ampesi served with garden eggs stew, while the Okai Koi Sub-Metro took third position with konkonte paired with groundnut soup.
The Ashiedu Keteke Sub-Metro also impressed the judges with its preparation of fufu and goat light soup, while the Ablekuma South Sub-Metro participated with a dish of beans served with fried plantain.
The competition formed part of activities lined up for the Eat Ghana, Wear Ghana initiative, which seeks to promote Ghanaian culture, cuisine and locally made products within the corporate environment.
The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, said the competition reflected the Assembly’s commitment to promoting Ghanaian culture and supporting local industries, noting that food remained a vital part of the country’s identity and heritage.
He explained that the Eat Ghana, Wear Ghana initiative was designed to encourage Ghanaians to appreciate and prioritise locally produced goods, adding that such efforts would help boost local businesses and contribute to national economic growth.
The Mayor commended staff for their enthusiastic participation, stating that the spirit of unity, creativity and cultural pride displayed during the competition was commendable and aligned with the Assembly’s broader vision of building a vibrant and culturally conscious city.
