The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has given traders occupying bus stops across the metropolis, a 48-hour ultimatum to vacate, ahead of an enforcement exercise aimed at restoring order and improving public safety.
According to the Assembly, the directive sought to address concerns raised by commercial drivers over the persistent occupation of designated stopping points, which obstructed the movement of vehicles and pedestrians and disrupted the smooth operation of public transport.
In a press release issued in Accra on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, the AMA said traders operating at the affected locations were required to immediately cease trading and vacate the bus stops within the stipulated period.
The Assembly acknowledged that the unauthorised occupation of designated bus stops by hawkers contributed to traffic congestion and forced commuters to board and alight from vehicles at unsafe locations, thereby increasing the risk of road accidents.
The AMA indicated that the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey had already initiated enforcement measures to address the challenge, including the removal of traders occupying unauthorised spaces at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, Achimota and parts of the Central Business District (CBD).
The statement said the ongoing measures formed part of broader efforts to ensure that public spaces were used for their intended purposes and that designated bus stops remained accessible to transport operators and commuters.
The AMA warned that it would intensify enforcement and take the necessary action against persons who disregarded the directive in accordance with its by-laws.
The Assembly also cautioned hawkers against returning to locations cleared during the exercise, stressing that the reoccupation of bus stops would attract further enforcement action, including prosecution.
It urged commercial drivers, traders, and other stakeholders to cooperate with the exercise to ensure the smooth movement of traffic and the safety of commuters and other road users.
The AMA reiterated its commitment to maintaining public order, promoting road safety, and ensuring the orderly use of public spaces across the metropolis.
