AMA supports Assembly members with 20 tricycles to strengthen sanitation operations

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has presented 20 tricycles to its members to strengthen waste collection and sanitation operations across the respective electoral areas.

The tricycles, presented by the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, to the Presiding Member of the Assembly, Hon. Musah Ziyad on Thursday, November 5, 2026 are expected to enhance the capacity of Assembly Members to mobilise residents and facilitate the evacuation of refuse during community sanitation exercises across the metropolis.

The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, who witnessed the presentation commended the Mayor for the initiative, describing it as a practical investment in waste management infrastructure.

He said the government was working to expand waste management infrastructure through the construction of additional waste transfer sites, with some development partners also expressing interest in supporting the initiative.

He explained that improving waste management required investment across the entire chain, including waste collection, transportation and evacuation, adding that the AMA's intervention was consistent with the government's commitment to strengthening sanitation infrastructure.

Hon. Ayariga encouraged other Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to emulate the initiative by directing more of their internally generated revenue towards productive investments in waste management.

He also urged Assembly Members to intensify public education and mobilise households to take responsibility for the cleanliness of their surroundings, noting that environmental sanitation should extend beyond individual homes.

He observed that some residents cleaned their homes but deposited refuse outside, expecting government to take responsibility for its collection, and stressed the need for a shared responsibility in maintaining clean communities.

Speaking during the presentation, the Mayor said the procurement was in response to a request by assembly members for logistical support to improve sanitation operations in their respective electoral areas.

Hon. Allotey said the Assembly had fulfilled its promise by purchasing the 20 tricycles, stressing that the procurement was financed entirely through its Internally Generated Funds (IGF) and not through credit or the District Assemblies Common Fund.

He urged the Assembly Members to ensure that the equipment was put to effective use and properly maintained to achieve the intended purpose.

The Presiding Member expressed appreciation to the Minister and the Mayor for the initiative, stressing that the provision of the tricycles would go a long way towards supporting the Assembly's efforts to improve sanitation across the respective electoral areas.
