The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey has assured fisherfolk and residents of Chorkor that discussions were underway to revive the Kpaashimo festival in a new and improved form for the benefit of the community.
According to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) boss, the decision to halt the celebration was intended to allow for its reorganisation in a way that would better serve the interests of the people.
The Mayor gave the assurance on Tuesday during a working visit to the Chorkor Electoral Area, where he inspected a beach clean-up exercise aimed at improving environmental sanitation, protecting public health and restoring the city’s coastline.
The visit brought together Assembly officials, residents and fisherfolk, with discussions centred on livelihoods, culture, sanitation, security and the future development prospects of the Chorkor coastline.
Addressing concerns over the festival, the Mayor assured the fisherfolk not to be worried, expressing confidence that the process would end well for everyone.
Touching on sanitation and development, he noted that cleaner and better-managed beaches could in future attract tourism-related investment, including hotel development, while creating employment opportunities for young people and boosting the local economy.
He indicated that restoring the beach would, therefore, serve a dual purpose of improving environmental conditions and positioning the area for economic transformation.
The Mayor added that if the beachfront was properly cleaned and maintained, it could attract investors and contribute to improving the fortunes of the youth and the wider Chorkor community.
