No trader will lose their shop – Mayor of Accra to Timber Market fire victims

17.Sep.2025
The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey has assured traders at the Timber Market that their trading spaces would not be taken away from them following last Saturday’s fire outbreak, which destroyed parts of the market.

Mayor Allotey gave the assurance on Tuesday when he paid a working visit to the fire scene to sympathise with the affected traders and conveyed the government’s commitment to support them in rebuilding the market.

He disclosed that President John Dramani Mahama had asked him to identify the kind of assistance required to restore the market.

Mayor Allotey stressed that the Assembly would stand with the traders throughout the reconstruction process and urged the leadership of the market to be fair and non-partisan in the reallocation of shops when the rebuilding is completed.

He emphasised that every trader who had a shop before the incident would duly get back their spaces.

“We thank God that no life was lost. Once we have life, we can rebuild this market,” he told the traders, adding that no one would be allowed to take away their land or spaces.

The Mayor also indicated that the Assembly would work with the executives of the market to create clear access routes to enable vehicles, including fire tenders, to easily enter the market in the event of any future emergencies.

He pledged to meet with the market leaders to map out strategies for reconstruction, noting that the support of the government and other stakeholders would be mobilised to ensure a speedy recovery for the Timber Market.
