The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has secured a $3 million grant from the African Development Bank (AfDB) to undertake the Accra Waste Separation and Composting Project.
The facility, obtained with technical support from the C40 Cities Finance Facility (CFF), would serve as co-financing to accelerate the implementation of the project and deepen the city’s shift towards climate-smart waste management.
Accra’s Waste Separation and Composting Project was selected for the grant as one of 18 successful proposals out of more than 1,000 submissions received from across the continent because of its strong climate mitigation potential, alignment with national and municipal climate goals, as well as ability to catalyse long-term climate-smart waste management solutions were key factors in its selection.
The project, designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve waste diversion from landfill and recycling, and advance circular economy practices within the city of Accra, is expected to transform Accra’s waste management system into a more efficient, climate-friendly and sustainable model.
Speaking after the announcement of the grant, Mayor of Accra, Hon Michael Kpakpo Allotey, described the facility as a significant milestone in Accra’s ongoing efforts to build a cleaner, greener and more climate-resilient city adding that the AMA remained firmly committed to promoting sustainable waste management, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing environmental health across the metropolis.
He indicated that the City of Accra was extremely grateful to the AfDB for the grant award and to the C40 CFF, funded by the Governments of Germany and the United Kingdom, for their continuous support throughout the project preparation process and the successful application to the Climate Action Window.
As part of the grant award and onboarding process, a delegation from the AMA participated in a Regional Inception Workshop for approved mitigation projects in Nairobi, Kenya, from 26–28 November 2025.
The workshop brought together selected cities and institutions from across Africa to receive orientation, technical guidance and training on AfDB grant implementation procedures, to ensure that beneficiary cities comply with AfDB standards and deliver measurable climate results.
