The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, on Monday, led a special revenue mobilisation exercise to recover monies owed to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) by businesses and property owners within the Central Business District (CBD).
The operation, which formed part of the Assembly’s renewed efforts to enhance revenue generation and improve service delivery, saw the team visiting several commercial properties, including the UTC, J.T. Hammond and Peter Rayman buildings, as well as Pomaa Plaza, Forenco Mall, U.A.C. and Georgina Stores, among others.
While some of the establishments made part payments on the spot, others were issued deadlines to settle their outstanding arrears in full.
During the exercise, the Mayor, accompanied by the Metro Coordinating Director, Mr Douglas Annoful, Metro Finance Director, Mr Abeeku Amissah and a Revenue Mobilisation Task Force, visited several commercial buildings and establishments that had defaulted in paying their property rates for more than a year.
Speaking after the operation, Hon. Allotey underscored the importance of timely payment of property rates, business operating permits and all rents to support the Assembly’s development agenda, adding that revenue collected would be channelled into key areas such as sanitation improvement, infrastructure maintenance, and public safety initiatives.
He emphasised that the Assembly would not hesitate to take legal action against persistent defaulters, stressing that compliance with the city’s financial obligations was essential to sustaining Accra’s transformation under the “Resetting Accra” agenda.
He advised business owners and property managers to make available valid receipts of payment during inspections and to leave copies with caretakers when absent to avoid penalties.
“The Assembly will not entertain any excuses from defaulters or their agents. All ratepayers are therefore advised to ensure full compliance,” he said.
He noted that the exercise would continue throughout the month to recover all arrears owed to the Assembly.
