The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has directed all tricycle and auto-rickshaw operators, popularly known as ‘Aboboyaa’ and ‘Pragya’, to install reflective stickers at the back and on the sides of their vehicles by the end of August 2026, as part of measures to improve road safety and visibility in the city.

The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, who announced the directive at a press conference on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, also instructed tricycle riders to wear reflective clothing while operating on the roads.

The Mayor also directed tricycle operators to stay off the inner lanes of major roads and use service or side roads wherever such routes were available.

According to him, the measures were intended to make both riders and their tricycles more visible to other road users, particularly at night, to prevent road crashes.

The Mayor explained that where there were no service or side roads, tricycle riders would be required to keep to the outermost lane of the road.

According to him, the new requirements would take effect after the end of August, warning that operators who failed to comply would face enforcement action in accordance with the law.

Mayor Allotey urged operators to comply with the directive before enforcement commenced, stressing that the initiative was aimed at protecting riders, motorists and other road users.

He said the Assembly would intensify public education on the directive and engage operators to ensure that they understood the requirements before the deadline.

He called on tricycle operators to cooperate with the AMA and other relevant authorities to help improve road safety and maintain order on streets within the metropolis.

Mayor Allotey stated that the Assembly remained committed to introducing practical measures to reduce unsafe road practices and ensure that all road users operate responsibly within the city.
