The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has donated GH¢20,000 to support athletes who will represent Ghana at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The Mayor made the donation on Friday shortly after handing over the King’s Baton Relay to gospel artiste Empress Gifty at the AMA head office following the baton’s tour of Accra.

The Mayor, who received the King’s Baton from Mr Andrew Acheampong-Kyei (Esq.), Managing Director of GLICO General, before passing it on to renowned gospel musician Empress Gifty as part of activities marking the relay’s passage through the capital, said his decision formed part of Accra’s leadership role in national mobilisation.

Mayor Allotey noted that “everything starts from Accra,” stressing that the support was to bolster the Team's preparation and participation.

He urged corporate bodies and well-meaning individuals to complement the efforts of the government and sports authorities by  making donations to support their activities.

He pointed out that the baton’s Accra engagement formed part of a broader national itinerary ahead of the 2026 Games, adding that the AMA would continue to work with the GOC and partners to rally public and private support for Team Ghana’s final build-up.

The donation which followed an appeal by the President of the GOC during the ceremony saw additional pledges including GH¢10,000 from the Member of Parliament (MP) for Odododiodio, Hon. Ashie Kotey, GH¢20,000 from the GLICO Managing Director, as well as  GH¢20,000 jointly from the Municipal Chief Executive and the MP for Korle Klottey, Hon. Alfred Allotey - Gaisie and Hon. Zenator Agyeman Rawlings bringing on-the-spot commitments to GH¢70,000.

Speakers at the event emphasised that the King’s Baton Relay, a long-standing Commonwealth tradition of uniting nations through sport, continues to symbolise shared values and international friendship.

Officials added that Ghana’s hosting of this leg of the relay underscores the country’s dedication to fostering camaraderie and nurturing the next generation of athletes.
