23.Aug.2024

The second edition of the Womba Accra Street Arts Festival, an annual cultural event aimed at showcasing arts, music, and culture within the Gamashie enclave, will climax this weekend on the John Evans Atta Mills High Street.

The week-long festival, which began on August 19, 2024, and will conclude on August 25, is organized by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), in collaboration with the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) and the Creative Arts Council (CAC).

The festival is designed to provide a platform for artists and creatives to display their talents while promoting the rich artistic heritage of Accra. On site would be the sale of indigenous cuisines at affordable price.

This year’s edition features a variety of activities, including panel discussions on arts, a movie night, performances of old folks' songs and storytelling, a torchlight night procession, processions of traditional leaders, highlife music, art exhibitions, live paintings, and art installations.

Speaking at the launch event held at the City Hall in Accra, the Mayor of Accra, Elizabeth K.T. Sackey, represented by the Director of Administration at the AMA, Mr Samuel Amponsah, highlighted the significance of the festival. She noted that the event offers participants the opportunity to experience the city of Accra in diverse ways, including sightseeing at important landmarks within Gamashie.

Mayor Sackey emphasized that the festival is a unique platform for local businesses within the community to showcase their products and engage in trade, fostering economic activity.

She also praised the organizers for creating opportunities for both established and emerging artists to exhibit their creativity while attracting art lovers to experience street arts in Accra.

Alex Ntiamoah Boakye, the Chief Coordinator of the Womba Street Arts Festival, disclosed that this year’s theme, "Continuum: Connecting the Threads of Art, Culture, and Community," is crucial as it fosters dialogue on how arts and culture can influence community bonding.

Boakye further assured the public that security arrangements had been made, with festival organizers working closely with the regional police command and the James Town District Police Station to ensure a peaceful event.

Boakye also revealed plans to award the best performers in future editions of the festival, adding that the event’s focus on Gamashie is aimed at promoting creativity and culture within the community. He encouraged residents to turn out in large numbers to support the program, celebrate Ghana’s rich cultural heritage, and experience creativity in all its forms.

As the festival nears its climax, attendees are expected to witness an exciting blend of art, culture, and entrepreneurship over the final weekend of activities.
