The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has inspected renovation works at the Rev. Thomas Clegg Basic School in the Okaikoi South Sub-Metropolitan District.
The renovation exercise, which followed a promise made by the Mayor during his visit to the school last week to distribute stationery and welcome new entrants, includes the painting and cementing of classrooms, smoothing of floors, and the construction of staircases at the entrances of the Kindergarten and Classes Three, Four, and Five.
Speaking during the inspection, Hon. Allotey said the initiative was in fulfilment of his commitment to improve teaching and learning environments in basic schools across the metropolis.
He explained that it was the right of children to learn in conducive spaces that promote academic excellence and not a privilege, adding that as politicians, it was their responsibility to address the challenges in the city.
Interacting with pupils, the Mayor asked if they were happy with the renovation works and encouraged them to study hard, reminding them that they were the future leaders of the country.
“These children deserve the best, and whatever we do for them today will shape the future of the city and the nation,” he said.
He stressed that his goal as Mayor was not to pursue personal wealth but to leave a lasting legacy in the city of Accra.
“We don’t have to be told to work for the people. This is why we were voted for to improve lives. It is by the grace of God that we are serving the people, and so we must deliver. My aim is to leave a legacy, not to make money, because money has limits,” he said.
The Mayor assured teachers, pupils, and parents that the Assembly would continue to undertake similar interventions across schools in the metropolis to strengthen education delivery and improve infrastructure for learning.
