She said the current expansion works would allow tourists and visitors to understand and appreciate the work of Ghana’s former President as well as pay homage adding that the Freedom Wall depicting the different states of emotions of former President Nkrumah would provide visitors with a natural sense of who Dr Kwame Nkrumah was.

“When you visit the new edifice you will experience the rich history of Dr Kwame Nkrumah you have never seen, the quotes and pictures displayed at the Freedom wall are emotional as it describes his thought and experience as a President...Visiting the place will give a real feel of Dr Nkrumah,” she said.

"The official Vehicle used by the former president, a vintage Cadillac, made in the United States and secured with Bulletproof features in Bulgaria, is also parked in the freedom hall to give visitors a feel of what he liked, " she added.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo who officially opened the renovated park said the modernization was in line with plans by the government to make it one of the best heritage tourism attractions in West Africa.

He charged the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MTAC) to ensure that agencies under the ministry devised effective marketing and promotional strategies to achieve the target.

Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Dr Mohammed Awal, said Ghana had its fortress in heritage and political tourism, “adding that this was what the government wanted to leverage to make Ghana the most attractive destination on the continent”.

He announced that soon, the Du Bois Centre, the Osu Castle and the forts and castles would be modernised and linked with the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park to make the country the most attractive tourism destination in Africa.

Dr Awal said the target was for tourism to generate $6 billion per annum as well as 300,000 jobs within the same period.

The daughter of Dr Nkrumah, Samia Nkrumah, commended President Akufo-Addo for executing the project.

She also thanked many people, including the old staff of the park who for decades had been telling the story of Dr Nkrumah and his fight for Pan-Africanism.

The redeveloped facility located on the former British colonial Polo Grounds in the heart of the city of Accra, the same place where Dr Nkrumah declared Ghana’s independence in 1957 was constructed in 1990 by late President Jerry John Rawlings, as a tribute to Ghana’s first President and as a means of preserving the nation’s heritage and officially opened to the public in 1992.
