AMA kick-starts "Operation  Clean Your Frontage" with decongestion, clean up exercises in Accra

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly today commenced the operation clean your frontage initiative with a decongestion exercise to ride the Central Business District of unauthorized trading on pavements and streets as well as loading vehicles. 

The “Operation Clean Your Frontage”, an initiative which is being championed by the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council under the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, seeks to make it obligatory for all individuals and corporate entities to be responsible for the cleaning and greening of their immediate surroundings.

The campaign which officially took off today after a short ceremony at the Independence Square, to outdoor officials from various local assemblies and security officers from the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service and Ghana Immigration Service, to enforce the Sanitation by-laws saw the public being sensitized on modalities and organisation of clean-up exercises in some selected areas, including Kaneshie First Light, to Obetsebi-Lamptey Roundabout, the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Farisco, UTC and Okaishie. 

Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Elizabeth Kwastoe Tawiah Sackey, who spoke to the media after the exercise urged residents and traders in the city to participate fully in the initiative as it would help in achieving the dream of making Accra a clean city. 

She noted that as part of activities earmarked for the campaign Public Health Officers from the AMA had been tasked to visit every household, business among others to inspect that state of sanitation and encore the law adding that a Rapid Response Team was undergoing training to ensure strict adherence. 

She also urged commercial vehicle drivers who load at unauthorised locations in the city to move into the lorry stations to *avoid* unnecessary traffic congestion in the city adding that offenders would be dealt with.
