12.Dec.2023

The Mayor of Accra, Hon Elizabeth K. T.  Sackey has received commendation from Perbi Cubs, an Ed Tech company that promotes literacy, for her unwavering support and commitment to fostering literacy among the youth.

The accolade comes in recognition of the Mayor's instrumental role in supporting and promoting the inter-school reading competition initiated by Perbi Cubs, to nurture a culture of reading and learning among students in the region.

Perbi Cubs, known for its advocacy in education and literacy, expressed its appreciation through its evidence-based, cost-effective reading programmes when Mrs. Anyele Perbi, CEO of Perbi Cubs, presented a citation to Mayor Sackey at the City Hall in Accra.

"We profoundly appreciate you, Hon. Elizabeth Naa Kwatsoe Tawiah Sacked, the Mayor of Accra, for supporting the Perbi Cubs Inter-School Reading Quiz under the umbrella of UNESCO Accra World Book Capital 2023. Your support highlights the value of education and literacy in Accra and Ghana at large, inspiring young minds to embrace the world of knowledge. Thank you for being so dedicated to promoting a culture of reading and intellectual development. Ayekoo,” the citation read.

Mrs. Anyele Perbi, CEO of Perbi Cubs, emphasised the critical importance of promoting literacy from a young age stressing that "Mayor Sackey has demonstrated exemplary leadership by recognizing the pivotal role of reading in shaping the future of our youth."

The inter-school reading competition has become a transformative platform, encouraging students to develop a passion for reading while honing their critical thinking skills," she said.

The competition, which involves schools from various socioeconomic backgrounds, aims to create a level playing field for students to showcase their literary talents. It spans multiple rounds, covering diverse genres of literature and challenging participants to expand their horizons beyond their academic curriculum.

The Mayor in a remark was thankful for the recognition and underscored the importance of collaboration with stakeholders in advancing education through reading.

"I am honoured by the acknowledgement from Perbi Cubs. Education is a collective responsibility, and initiatives like the inter-school reading competition are catalysts for fostering a culture of learning and intellectual curiosity among our youth," he said.

The Mayor also announced plans to expand and enhance the inter-school reading competition in the coming years, with a focus on reaching more schools and encouraging widespread participation.

The Inter-School Reading Competition is open to students from primary and secondary schools across Accra. Participating schools will engage in a series of challenges that not only test their reading comprehension but also promote critical thinking and analytical skills.

Following the launch of the quiz, there would be a registration period within which schools were expected to sign up to take part in the competition, followed by a month of coaching and warming up, in anticipation of the first rounds of the competition.

After the coaching, qualifying rounds would be held to shortlist schools and finally in February 2024 which would go live on major TV networks.
