Duraplast pledges 20 waste bins to improve sanitation in Accra

Duraplast Ghana Ltd. has honoured a request by the Mayor of Accra, Hon.Michael Kpakpo Allotey to support sanitation efforts in the metropolis with 20 waste bins to help curb littering and improve cleanliness in selected parts of the city.

The company’s Executive Director, Ms. Mireille Hitti accepted the request on Tuesday when the Mayor, accompanied by the Member of Parliament for Okaikwei South Constituency, Hon. Ernest Adomako paid a working visit to Duraplast Ghana Ltd. to deepen collaboration on local development priorities and explore avenues for job creation.

The visit formed part of the Assembly’s broader engagement with businesses to build partnerships that support urban management and create opportunities for residents.

Speaking during the engagements, the Mayor said the Accra Metropolitan Assembly would be responsible for collecting waste deposited in the bins, explaining that the containers would be installed at selected locations across the city to improve sanitation and curb littering.

He noted that beyond the initial 20 bins, the Assembly was considering the placement of additional bins at strategic vantage points to expand access to proper waste disposal and enhance citywide cleanliness.

The Mayor appealed to residents and visitors to refrain from dumping refuse into drains and littering public spaces, stressing that such practices contributed to clogged gutters, environmental degradation, and unhealthy conditions.

He cautioned that persons who flouted sanitation regulations would be dealt with in accordance with the Assembly’s relevant by-laws, adding that enforcement would be sustained alongside public education to promote responsible waste disposal.

For her part, the Executive Director said the donation formed part of the company’s commitment to social responsibility and practical investment in solutions aimed at improving sanitation in the country.

She indicated that Duraplast Ghana Ltd. viewed effective waste management as a shared responsibility and was ready to support initiatives that delivered visible improvements in community hygiene.

The Executive Director also assured that she would join the Mayor and his team during the installation exercise across the city, describing the initiative as a collaborative step to encourage proper waste disposal and strengthen public ownership of a cleaner environment.
