COVID-19: EU supports AMA with handwashing facilities for Polyclinics

08.May.2020

The European Union (EU) Delegation to Ghana, in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, has donated handwashing facilities and reusable face masks to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).

The items are expected to be distributed to the Ussher, Kaneshie and Mamprobi Polyclinics all in Accra.

The EU Ambassador, H.E Diana Acconcia who presented the items said the gesture was a joint initiative between her outfit, the Ministry of Finance and Plastic Punch, and observed that the EUs solidarity between the different countries of Europe, and countries outside Europe, like Ghana, remains a priority.

She said the EU was working hard to implement initiatives aimed at supporting the most vulnerable communities, and the health sector during the COVID-19 crisis.

Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah, receiving the items expressed his appreciation to the EU for the gesture adding that it reinforces the relations and partnership between the AMA and the EU.

He was hopeful that the donation would go a long way to complement efforts by the assembly towards the fight against the COVID-19.

"I will like to thank the EU for this wonderful gesture, it reminds me of the long-standing relationship between the AMA and the EU. This gesture reinforces our relations and partnership. We want to ensure that people who visit and work in our health facilities wash their hands frequently, " he said.

He reiterated that the AMA as part measures to prevent the spread of the virus in the city had supplied handwashing facilities to all markets in the city, distributed 10,000 face masks as well as embarking on an extensive public education.

He urged all and sundry to observe the safety protocols notably, constant handwashing under running water, sanitising of hands and the wearing of nose masks in public among others.
