The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced a citywide clean-up exercise dubbed “Ghana@69 Clean-up", aimed at sustaining the civic spirit and community responsibility inspired by Ghana’s 69th Independence celebrations
According to the AMA, the exercise, which forms part of the March 2026 edition of National Sanitation Day (NSD), will take place on Saturday, March 7, 2026, starting at 6:00 a.m. and continuing until all activities are completed.
In a press release signed by the Head of Public Affairs, Mr Gilbert Nii Ankrah on Thursday, the AMA said the clean-up would focus on intensive cleansing operations at selected hotspots across the city, including Agbogbloshie, the Central Business District (CBD), Tuesday Market, Chemu Naa, Kaneshie and Kwame Nkrumah Interchange.
The day’s activities, the Assembly explained, would include desilting and cleaning of drains, sweeping of streets and alleyways, removal of unauthorised posters and banners, and general cleaning of markets, lorry parks and other public spaces, as part of measures to improve environmental conditions and reduce flooding risks.
The AMA urged residents, market leaders, transport unions, community groups and institutions to organise similar sanitation activities within their neighbourhoods to complement the Assembly’s efforts.
To facilitate the activities on the day, the AMA said it would deploy Public Health Officers popularly called “Sama-Sama” as well as the Sanitation Taskforce, sweepers, and janitors across all sub-metros, with the necessary logistics and equipment.
The Assembly reminded the public that failure to comply with sanitation directives or refusal to participate in communal labour constitutes an offence, punishable on summary conviction by a fine of up to 100 penalty units or imprisonment of not less than 30 days and not more than six months, or both, adding that continuing offenders are liable to additional daily penalties.
The AMA reiterated its commitment to working with stakeholders to advance its vision of making Accra a smart and sustainable city.
