Accra Greening and Beautification Project: AMA, Ecobank sign MOU

18.Feb.2020

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Ecobank Ghana Limited to adopt and green the Ridge Roundabout and the median from African Union (AU) Circle to National Theatre Traffic light in Accra for the next five years.

This follows a call by the Mayor to corporate bodies and individuals to adopt, green and beautify open spaces in the city in line with its Sustainable Greening and Beautification Project which was launched in September 2018.

Speaking at a signing ceremony on Tuesday at the head office of the bank in Accra, the Mayor of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah, expressed his appreciation towards the bank's decision to support the Sustainable Greening and Beautification of Accra Project.

He said the signing of the MOU had come at an opportune time when Ecobank was about celebrating its 30 years anniversary and assured the assembly's commitment to transform the financial hub of the city into a green environment.

He also commended Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA)for accepting AMAs leadership on this initiative to ensure continuity and sustainability as parts of efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change in the city.

" Let me say a big thank you to Honourable Agyei Tawiah, MCE for Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly. He is a visionary leader and somebody who believes in the totality of Accra. He has respectfully asked that whatever the Accra Metropolitan Assembly was doing should be continued because he has trust and confidence in whatever we have started with you, " he said.

The Managing Director of Ecobank Ghana and Regional Executive Anglophone West Africa (AWA), Daniel Sackey said the decision to partner the AMA to green open spaces in the city reaffirms the bank’s belief in fostering sustainable development of economies, societies and the environment in which they operate.

"In signing this agreement, we are accepting the responsibility to work with AMA and other service providers to ensure that we keep the adopted area clean and green,” he said.

He said the move formed part of the bank's activities to mark its 30th anniversary scheduled in March this year adding that the celebration would involve a number of joint activities with partners, customers and the wider public through iconic projects.

He appealed to other corporate organisations to adopt similar open spaces in the city in order to make Accra not only the cleanest city in Africa but also the most beautiful.

Other corporate institutions that have partnered the AMA towards its sustainable greening and beautification project includes the GCB Bank Limited, Hisense and Bank of Africa.
