Mayor of Accra joins the nation in mourning the passing of Dr. Omane Boamah, Dr. Murtala Mohammed, and six others

The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has joined the rest of the nation in mourning the tragic loss of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment,Science and Technology Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, and six others who died in a military helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

Speaking immediately after the news broke, the Mayor described the incident as a heartbreaking moment for Ghana, saying the day marked one of the darkest days in Ghana’s recent history.

“This is a monumental loss for our dear nation. We have lost visionary leaders, loyal public servants, and gallant compatriots who gave their all in service to Ghana,” the Mayor said.

 Paying a glowing tribute to Dr. Murtala Mohammed, the Mayor recalled his close collaboration with the AMA in finding ways to tackle the city’s growing plastic waste challenge, adding that they had recently initiated plans to implement bold city-wide interventions aimed at reducing single-use plastics and promoting sustainable waste management.

“His passion for the environment and his commitment to green innovation were inspiring. We had started working on concrete actions to transform Accra into a cleaner and environmentally friendly city. His passing is a major blow to our collective fight for environmental sustainability,” the Mayor lamented.

Dr. Omane Boamah was a leader of great discipline and foresight he said, stressing that his stewardship at the Ministry of Defence strengthened national security and civil-military relations.

Touching on the six others who also lost their lives, including security officers, the AMA boss emphasised that their sacrifices would be remembered as acts of courage and patriotism.

Mayor Allotey extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, the President of the Republic, the Ghana Armed Forces, and the Ministries affected by the tragedy and Ghanaians in general.

He noted that in line with national mourning protocols,  a gesture of respect and solidarity with the families of the deceased and the entire nation ,all Ghana National Flags and Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) flags were  being flown at half-mast.
