AMA inaugurates Sub-Metropolitan District Councils

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has inaugurated three (3) Sub-Metropolitan District Councils in the city.

The three Sub-Metropolitan District Councils which were inaugurated at a brief ceremony on Friday at the City Hall in Accra were the Ablekuma South, Okaikoi South and Ashiedu-keteke Sub-Metropolitan District Councils.

At the ceremony, 29 sub-metropolitan councillors were also sworn into office by Her Honour Afia Owusuwaa Appiah.

They are Ablekuma South nine (9), Ashiedu keteke, ten (10) and OkaiKoi South ten (10).

Mayor of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah, in his inaugural address congratulated the newly sworn-in councillors and charged them to be committed and selfless in the discharge of their duties as well as be guided by the rules and regulations governing the Local Government system in the country.

He said the sub-metropolitan councils were important structures in the Local Government system hence the inauguration of the councils.

"Today having been appointed by H. E. the President, Nana Akufo Addo and sworn into office, the task is for you to go and work, serve your community and nation so that tomorrow when the story of your community is being told when the life of the Assembly is being recounted your name will also be written in Gold. As sub-metro councillors, you need to deliberate on issues in your community and be guided by the rules of the work.”

He observed that the sub-metropolitan councils were peculiar to Metropolitan Assembly adding that "to whom much is given much is expected."

The Mayor who used the occasion to eulogize the late Former President Jerry John Rawlings recounted his encounter with him on issues of the environment and admonished the councillors to be agents of development in their respective communities as well as ensure a clean environment.

"You are going to be chief servants in your communities and your primary responsibility should be issues of the environment.  If your community will be clean, and there will be development, it all rests on your shoulders. The Constitution of the republic sets out the creation of Assemblies as the pivot of development in our community.

He also urged the councillors to as a matter of urgency elect their respective Sub Metropolitan Chairpersons.
