The Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly(AMA), Mohammed Adjei Sowah has announced plans to set up a fund to support bronze medalist at the just-ended Olympic games in Tokyo, Samuel Takyi and other emerging stars from the Accra Metropolis.
He said this would be in a form of monthly stipends to help in their training and upkeep which would serve as a motivation for them to achieve their dreams.
Mayor Sowah made the announcement when the Ghana Boxing Federation and Ghana's contingent for the Tokyo Olympic Games led by Ben Nunoo Mensah, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee(GOC) called on him to officially present the bronze medal and Olympic Torch to him on Wednesday at the City hall in Accra.
"We as an Assembly is keen on supporting sports because to me it is an opportunity for people in the low-income areas to earn income and make a lot of money for themselves", he expressed.
He advised the reigning Tokyo Olympic champion Samuel Takyi to be disciplined in discharging his duties as a boxer.
"You have to put away the fame for now and concentrate on working hard for a bigger title in the next ten years...lack of Discipline is one of the major challenges when it comes to boxing. If you are not disciplined, you can't do sports. From now your focus should be on how to make your management, family and fans proud and also to attain bigger titles," he added.
The President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Ben Nunoo Mensah thanked the Mayor of Accra for his support ahead of the Olympic games.
President Ben Nunoo Mensah was accompanied by Coach Asare, Coach Vincent Akai Nettey, Captain of Team Ghana at the Tokyo Games, Sulemana Tetteh, Samuel Takyi and other members of the Ghana Olympic Committee.
