The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) in collaboration with Jandel Limited, an events management company has announced plans to establish a Christmas village and "Light Up Accra" to usher city dwellers into the 2020 Christmas festivities.
The initiative which is being supported by Ecobank, Stanbic Bank, Absa Bank will combine lights, flowers to beautify the capital city.
Speaking to journalists during the launch of the programme, at the Accra City Hall on Wednesday Mayor of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah said the essence of the initiative was to ensure that city dwellers celebrate Christmas in the midst of COVID-19 adding that the Christmas Village would be located at the Nationalism park which is between the Freedom and Justice arch and the Accra Sports Stadium.
"The Christmas Village is going to be located at the Nationalism Park which is between the Freedom and Justice arch and the Accra sports stadium. This is where we want some kids to come and spend some time over there. We are aware of COVID-19 and the fact that the morale is down while others are paying attention to the election.
But in the midst of all these things we think that people must have some excitement and not be depressed,” he said.
He expressed appreciation to the Korle Klottey, La Dade Kotopon, Ayawaso West as well as the Ablekuma West Municipal Assemblies for their commitment to the initiative.
Mr. Adjei Sowah also assured celebrants of adequate measures to ensure their safety in the course of the festivities.
“We are fully aware of the safety concerns; that people wash their hands, wear face masks and keep their social distance. These are standard protocols we adhere to at all times. We can assure that the COVID-19 protocols will strictly be adhered to with security provided over there”, he said.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Jandel Limited, Afi Amoro, stated that, this year's edition would exhibit showmanship never witnessed before.
" We live in an unwavering belief that, the people of Ghana will continue to rise and grow stronger, than before. The 2020 edition will harness the spirit of our tenacity to surmount our challenges, and exhibit showmanship never witnessed before, " she said.
The ‘Light Up Accra’ initiative, was first introduced in December 2019.
