"My office and the Assembly have an interest in developing sports in the city. We know well that boxing is one sport if we channel a lot of resources into would help raise the flag of this country high,” he said.

He said sports was a golden opportunity to reduce unemployment among the youth adding that boxing has afforded the people of Accra the chance to showcase their talents since boxing originates from the city.

The upcoming boxing league which is slated for 28th September, 2018 at the Bukom Boxing Arena would comprise 26 juvenile, amateur as well as professional fights and it's expected to take place every 2 weeks throughout the 13 months period of the tournament.

The Mayor said the tournament would not only unearth new talents but also promote the good boxers and ultimately nurture champions who could represent the country in international championships.

Hon. Adjei Sowah commended the management of the Trust Sports Emporium for its effective management of the facility and stressed the need to complete other game centres such as swimming pools and basketball courts in the emporium to develop the lesser known sports.

President of the Ghana Boxing Association, Lawyer Peter Zwennes, briefing the AMA Boss, indicated that the reintroduction of the boxing league was in line with a corporate strategic plan developed to revamp the boxing that seized years back due to financial constraints.

He noted that the tournament, would attract a lot of sponsorship to equip various boxing gyms and afford boxers the opportunity to showcase their skills and further put Ghana on the world map.
