The Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Hon. Elizabeth Kwatsoe Sackey, has expressed satisfaction with the progress of key development projects in the metropolis, including the 70% completion of the Jamestown abattoir and 90% completion of the sanitation court at the AMA’s old office.
The two facilities aim to improve the city's meat processing standards and sanitation.
The Mayor expressed her satisfaction when she toured project sites on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, to inspect progress of work.
Mayor Sackey also visited the Ussher Hospital, the Jamestown abattoir, Mamprobi Hospital, and the newly constructed sheds for plantain vendors at the Agbogbloshie Market, where she commended contractors for their work.
Speaking to the media after the inspection, she stated that the ongoing works were largely on track and expected to be completed within the stipulated timelines.
“Most of the projects are at an advanced stage, with many nearing completion,” she said.
The Mayor emphasised the significance of the new abattoir to the local meat industry, noting that "once completed, the abattoir will meet modern standards, providing a safer environment for meat processing while improving the livelihoods of butchers.”
She also pointed out that the new sanitation court would play a critical role in ensuring that sanitation offenders were swiftly prosecuted, to improve the overall cleanliness of the city.
The Mayor also noted that the new sheds for plantain vendors had been fully constructed and were awaiting final inspection while urging traders in the area to maintain cleanliness in their surroundings.
"We are here to ensure that these projects meet the required standards before they are handed over to the beneficiaries," she remarked, reinforcing the AMA’s commitment to urban development and the well-being of Accra’s residents.
At the Ussher Hospital, Dr. Esther Odartey Asiedu, Director of Health at AMA, explained that the ongoing expansion work would significantly enhance healthcare delivery.
“The improvements will reduce waiting times for patients and allow the hospital to serve a larger portion of the community,” she said, adding that a new theatre under construction would enable the facility to perform surgeries and other medical procedures locally.
Officials who accompanied the Mayor on the tour included the Metro Coordinating Director, Douglas N.K. Annoful, Metro Finance Director, Abeiku Amissah, Head of Public Affairs, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, Deputy Director of Administration, Samuel Tutuani, and AMA’s Director of Public Health, Mrs. Florence Kuukyi among others.
