The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) with support from Zoomlion Ghana Limited has disinfected the Ghana Library Authority's (GLA) Head office and Accra Central Library (ACL).
The exercise which was undertaken during the early hours of Wednesday was aimed at fighting the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the city.
The exercise covered the children, lending, reference, extension schools and colleges, acquisition and distribution, processing, stores as well as the finance departments, compound, washrooms among others.
Before the commencement of the exercise, Mayor of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah reiterated the government's commitment towards the fight against the COVID-19 noting that all public places in the city had been earmarked for disinfection by the assembly.
He explained that the ACL serves as a public place for the acquisition of knowledge and dissemination of information hence the need for the disinfection exercise to reassure citizens of their safety and encourage the love of reading and learning.
He disclosed that the assembly had also distributed some Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and handwashing facilities to the library, Polyclinics, markets, among others to protect staff as well as encourage hand washing.
He urged all citizens to continuously wash their hands with soap under running water for at least 20 seconds, use alcohol-based sanitizers, wear nose masks when leaving the house, and desist from touching their faces to complement efforts aimed at preventing the spread of the virus in the country.
Madam Beatrice Ampadu, Metropolitan Librarian in charge of Accra Central Library expressed her appreciation to the Mayor for the exercise, PPEs and the handwashing facilities.
" The exercise was timely looking at the current situation concerning the COVID-19 because we all want to ensure that person using the library and the staff are protected, this initiative by AMA is commendable, " he said.
