Mayor of Accra hands over Ga Mashie Premix Filling Station for reconstruction

19.Jul.2024

The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Elizabeth Kwatsoe Sackey, has officially handed over the old Ga Mashie Premix Filling Station at the Jamestown Fishing Harbour for reconstruction.

The renovation work, which is expected to be completed within six weeks, includes the installation of new, efficient automated fuel pumps and dispensing systems, as well as digital monitoring and control systems, and the construction of new and secure storage tanks among others. The new system, upon completion, would address safety concerns and smuggling previously experienced in the old system, eliminate the need for manual purchases, allow for real-time monitoring, ensure remote fuel management, and improve auditing at the station.

Speaking after the handover, Mayor Sackey, accompanied by the Coordinating Director of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Douglas N.k Annoful, emphasized the importance of the reconstruction project, noting that it would enhance the operational efficiency of the fishing harbour and improve the livelihoods of the local fishing community. "The reconstruction of the Ga Mashie Premix Filling Station is a critical infrastructure project that will support our fishermen by ensuring they have reliable access to premix fuel," she said.

The Mayor highlighted that the project was part of a broader initiative to develop and modernize the fishing industry in Accra. "This is just one of several projects we are undertaking to boost the fishing sector, which is a vital part of our local economy," she added. She thanked all stakeholders, including the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, for their support and collaboration.

Some fishermen who spoke to journalists lauded the initiative as a timely intervention that would address the challenges faced by fishermen in accessing fuel for their businesses. "For years, we have struggled with the limitations of the old filling station. This reconstruction will significantly alleviate those challenges and increase our productivity," Atta Oko, a fisherman, said.

The contractor, after the symbolic handover, assured his commitment to completing the project on time and to the highest standards.

In a related development, the Mayor of Accra has paid a working visit to the Attoh Quarshie Boxing Gym at the Ga Mashie Development Agency (GAMADA), where she donated an undisclosed amount of money to youth boxers. She also visited the Independence Avenue School, which has been completed and will be commissioned soon.
