Mayor Sackey lauds Assemblymembers; hails their support in Accra's development

23.Dec.2024

The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Elizabeth K. T. Sackey, has lauded the dedication and support of Assembly Members during her tenure, describing their efforts as integral to the successes achieved.

Delivering her final address at the Third Ordinary Meeting of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) for 2024, the Mayor thanked the Assembly Members for their collaboration, citing driving transformative developments in sanitation, infrastructure, and revenue generation across the metropolis.

"Whatever posterity assigns to my tenure as Mayor of Accra, know that your efforts will remain an integral part of that legacy,” she said.

She described her tenure as a period of significant progress, despite the challenges encountered while highlighting sanitation as a critical area of focus.

She pointed out that the introduction of the Mayor’s Special Initiative on street sweeping, coupled with vigilant supervision of waste collection companies, resulted in a cleaner Central Business District and key streets such as the John Evans Atta Mills High Street and Asafoatse Nettey Road.

In the area of revenue mobilisation, she disclosed that the AMA recorded steady growth in Internally Generated Funds (IGF), crediting the improvement to a centralised digital platform, which minimised revenue leakages and streamlined collections.

Hon. Sackey also emphasised her administration’s commitment to infrastructure development, listing several completed projects, including a child care centre at Agbogbloshie, a sanitation court at the AMA Old Office, and classroom blocks for the Independence Avenue Cluster of Schools and Bishop Mixed School.

She also cited some ongoing projects, such as the Jamestown modern slaughterhouse which were nearing completion.

The Mayor mentioned some Sister City Agreements with cities in the United States, South Africa, Germany, Mexico, Italy, and Belize, adding that these partnerships facilitated initiatives in youth empowerment, climate action, and cultural exchanges, enhancing the city’s development prospects.
