Mayor of Accra urges AMA staff to sustain progress made

23.Dec.2024

The Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Hon. Elizabeth K.T. Sackey, has urged staff to sustain the progress made under her tenure and exhibit professionalism in service delivery.

Speaking during an end-of-year staff durbar held at the Omanye Aba Hall, Hon. Sackey expressed profound gratitude to God for enabling her to complete her four-year tenure as the first female Mayor of Accra, despite significant challenges.

She acknowledged the Almighty’s blessings over the programs and initiatives introduced during her leadership and commended the peaceful conduct of the elections, even though the results were not as she had hoped.

Reflecting on her time in office, the Mayor highlighted several achievements across key areas of governance, adding that waste management had seen significant improvement with the introduction of street sweepers and the enhanced supervision of partner organisations.

She pointed out that revenue mobilisation had also increased through a digitised central collection platform, which reduced cash handling and improved transparency.

"From a total revenue of GH¢14.8 million in 2021, the Assembly collected GH¢21.3 million as of November 30, 2024, representing 74.4% of the year’s budget," she revealed.

The Mayor outlined major infrastructural developments initiated during her tenure, including the construction of a 3-storey, 18-unit classroom block and a 3-unit kindergarten block for the Independence Avenue Cluster of Schools; the establishment of a modern slaughterhouse and a childcare centre at Agbogbloshie; market sheds to accommodate 270 traders at Makola Market (Phase II); and other sanitation and health-related facilities across the city.

Hon. Sackey highlighted improvements in staff motivation, noting an increase in salaries and allowances.

The Mayor also lauded the Assembly’s international collaborations, which led to significant advancements, including supplying medical equipment to Kaneshie Polyclinic and establishing a Migrant Desk under the AMA and International Organisation for Migration (IOM) partnership.

Accra’s participation in the Youth Climate Action Fund, powered by Bloomberg Philanthropies, was another key milestone she mentioned.

On legal matters, she proudly stated that the AMA had not lost a single case during her tenure, attributing the success to the reactivation of the legal department and the recruitment of competent solicitors.

Despite the challenges encountered, Hon. Sackey affirmed her belief that the Assembly had made remarkable progress encouraging staff to maintain the momentum, remain professional, and embrace the principle of “working with the speed of light” to ensure timely and quality service delivery.

While announcing her exit, she assured staff that her doors would remain open for consultations. She extended heartfelt gratitude to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for appointing her as the Deputy Greater Accra Regional Minister and later as the Mayor of Accra, describing the experiences as pivotal in her political career.

The Mayor also acknowledged the contributions of past and present Assembly Members and stakeholders who supported her administration, expressing appreciation for their efforts.

Staff of the Assembly praised the Mayor, for her remarkable leadership in improving their welfare, particularly through significant salary increments and the prompt payment of allowances.

They described her tenure as transformative and expressed gratitude for consistently prioritising their well-being, which motivated them to deliver quality services to the residents.
