The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Ishmael Ashitey was at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) on a working visit to familiarize himself with its operations and also interact with the Metro Security Committee( MESEC) and management.

The Minister who was recently sworn in by the President of the Republic Of Ghana, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo expressed his appreciation for the warm welcome accorded him and his team from the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC).

In welcoming him, the Metro Coordinating Director, Sam Ayeh–Datey took the opportunity to brief him on some general activities the Assembly has been engaged in and some of the challenges being faced.

Interacting with the AMA management team, the Minister urged them to acquaint themselves with the vision of the new government so that the Assembly’s plans and programmes would be structured in tandem with the national development agenda.

He highlighted some challenges he knows the Assembly faces and these are the perennial flooding, congestion in the Central Business District (CBD), sanitation and waste management. He was of the view that, it is very important for the Assembly to take all necessary steps to avert any disaster as a result of the rains.

Additionally, he was not in doubt that if the Assembly apply its bye-laws discreetly without favoring some people, the incidence of flooding and possible loss of lives can be prevented.

Other issues discussed at the meeting included decentralization, de-silting of storm water drains, congestion in the Metropolis, encroachment, the up springing of illegal structures, revenue mobilization, and boundary disputes among others.

Hon. Ishmael Ashitey, urged the AMA management team to monitor carefully the necessary financial and material resources of the Assembly and judiciously use them for the achievement of planned programmes, goals and targets.

The Minister earlier met the Metro Security Committee of the AMA where he was briefed on the security situation in the capital including the myriad of unresolved chieftaincy conflicts in Accra.
