The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has organized a community engagement at Nima and Mamobi both suburbs of Accra to enhance awareness on the provision of subsidized toilet facilities to households without decent toilets in deprived communities within the metropolis.

The project is under the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area(GAMA) Water and sanitation project(SWP) Rapid Response initiative(RRI) which is being supported by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD)with a 150 million world bank fund .

The fund is also meant for the building and fixing of central sewage systems ,providing of toilet facilities in schools in Accra and building the capacity of the implementing assemblies.

The assembly distributed flyers and brochures to residents to intensify education on the need to halt activities such as open defecation which lead to the outbreak of cholera.

Mr. Graham Sarbah, director in charge of drains at AMA and also the Project coordinator said, so far feedback on the project was encouraging and urged residents to take advantage of the project.

According to the AMA bye-laws, every household must have a decent toilet to prevent open defecation. The punishment for non- compliance could be maximum of two months’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.

A toilet costs about GH₵ 4,000 but upon payment of half of the amount the facility could be built in a month. Payment could be made on two platforms; registration at the main head office(High Street), and on Tigo platform where the beneficiary might deposit before the construction of the toilet facility.
